Various medications are offered for the treatment of OA to improve symptoms and function in the knees. Painkillers are the biggest drugs prescribed for OA patients, including non-steroidal drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, acetaminophen, salicylates and narcotic analgesics are offered for short-term pain relief.

1758 subjects with OA or risk of developing it participated in the study, with an average of 61.1 years of age, for an 8-year follow-up period. At the end of the eighth year, 16.76% of the subjects taking analgesics for OA had to undergo knee surgery.

Usually people who take painkillers don’t just take one; they have common relief effects on pain perception. The effects of different analgesics can be associated with different pathophysiological effects, such as local anti-inflammatory effects (ibuprofen), morphological changes in cartilage tissue (diclofenac), proteoglycans (celecoxib). Prolonged use of painkillers has been associated with knee surgery, the results suggest that the surgery can be explained with the progression of OA.

References

Nejad N.H. et al.
